Definitions

Dimension - An aspect of the data (such as Gender, Age or Jurisdiction), which is broken down into one or more members.

Member - A single possible value on a dimension. For example, "Male" and "Female" are members of the Gender dimension. Each member has a code and at least one label. Normally the label of a selected member is shown in the table.

Group – A group is a member that has an underlying hierarchy associated with it. For example, the “Offense Type” dimension contains groups for “Crimes Against Person”, “Crimes Against Property” and “Crimes Against Society” which are broad categorizations of the individual offenses. Note that both a group and its underlying members can be included in the table; the values associated with the group are not affected by which underlying members are selected.

Browsing a Table

The basics of browsing a table in the reporting component of Crime Insight include selecting members, swapping and nesting dimensions, sorting, ranking, and drilling down into a group.

• Selecting members is initiated by clicking on the name of a dimension in the table view or by clicking a dimension name in the dimension area to the left of the table view. Once on the Members tab, selections and searches can be done to customize the contents of that dimension. Use the checkboxes and the check and ‘x’ selection buttons to select or clear individual members or a collection of members. Click the Show Report button to view the table that is based on your customized selections.
• Dimensions can be dragged and dropped to change their placement on the rows, columns or on the slicer. Click and hold on the tile containing the dimension name to move it around. If you want to compare the members of one dimension against each member of another dimension, dimensions can be nested along the rows and/or columns. This can also be achieved by using the “Rearrange report” menu option from the Table Options icon on the toolbar.
• Sorting and ranking of the data are accomplished by clicking the up/down arrows or the 1, 2, 3 rank icons that are displayed in the column headers.
• A group is displayed as an underlined member and can be clicked to drill down into its members.

Exporting a Table

If you want to save your table into another format, click the Download arrow icon on the toolbar and select either the .csv or .xml (for Excel) format.
